Issues of Safe Use of Plant-Based Food Supplements: A Review

Background: The widespread use of specialized food products, including plant-based dietary supplements, is determined by a rich variety biologically active constituents. However, some plants containing such bioactive compounds as pulegone, menthofuran, estragole, methyleugenol, safrole, and thujone may cause adverse health effects. Objective: To review recent domestic international scientific papers in order to substantiate the importance regulating maximum permissible levels monoterpene ketones (pulegone, thujone) alkenylbenzenes (estragole, safrole) plant raw materials nutritional supplements. Materials methods: We used keywords search Scopus, Web Science, PubMed, RSCI abstract citation databases then applied information analysis expert examination techniques summarize research data published Russian English languages 2001–2021. initial sample consisted 43 articles, which 13 were excluded after screening. selection criteria included availability on metabolism organic question, their herbs herbal teas, toxic effects experimental animals, potential humans. selected 30 full-text publications classified type interventions.
